Oxford Happiness Questionnaire
The Oxford Happiness Questionnaire (OHQ) is a scientifically validated self-assessment designed to measure your overall level of happiness, emotional well-being, and satisfaction with life. Rather than focusing on temporary emotions, it provides a broader picture of how you generally experience life, relationships, purpose, optimism, and personal fulfillment.
At Motivationeer® Christian Coaching, this assessment is used as a powerful self-reflection tool to help you better understand where you are today, recognize areas of strength, and identify opportunities for meaningful personal and spiritual growth. The assessment encourages participants to reflect honestly on their current experiences while remembering that lasting joy is ultimately found in a growing relationship with Christ.
How the Assessment Works
The Oxford Happiness Questionnaire contains 29 carefully developed statements about thoughts, attitudes, emotions, and everyday experiences. Most people complete the assessment in approximately 5 to 10 minutes.
For each statement, you will select the response that best describes how you generally feel using a 6-point agreement scale:
- 1 – Strongly Disagree
- 2 – Moderately Disagree
- 3 – Slightly Disagree
- 4 – Slightly Agree
- 5 – Moderately Agree
- 6 – Strongly Agree
There are no right or wrong answers. The most valuable results come from answering honestly rather than choosing responses you think you “should” give.
What the Assessment Measures
The questionnaire explores several aspects of psychological well-being, including:
- Overall happiness
- Life satisfaction
- Positive outlook
- Self-confidence
- Sense of purpose
- Personal resilience
- Enjoyment of everyday life
- Healthy relationships
- Emotional balance
- Optimism about the future
Instead of measuring one emotion, the assessment provides a comprehensive snapshot of your overall sense of well-being.
Understanding Your Results
After completing the questionnaire, your responses are automatically scored and converted into an average Happiness Score on a 1.00 to 6.00 scale. You will also receive your subtotal score and a descriptive interpretation to help you understand your current level of well-being.
Your results are grouped into one of four interpretation bands:
| Happiness Score | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| 1.00 – 2.99 | Unhappy |
| 3.00 – 3.99 | Not Particularly Happy or Unhappy |
| 4.00 – 4.99 | Rather Happy |
| 5.00 – 6.00 | Very Happy |
These categories are intended to provide insight—not labels. Your score simply reflects where you are at this moment in time and can serve as a starting point for meaningful growth.
Why Take the Assessment?
Happiness is not about pretending life is perfect. It is about understanding how you are doing emotionally, mentally, and spiritually so you can intentionally pursue growth.
This assessment can help you:
- Increase self-awareness
- Recognize emotional patterns
- Celebrate personal strengths
- Identify areas that may need attention
- Monitor changes in well-being over time
- Support coaching conversations with objective data
- Establish a personal baseline before beginning a coaching journey
The assessment is especially valuable when repeated periodically to observe trends and measure progress. Motivationeer encourages clients to save each report so they can compare results over time and evaluate the impact of healthy habits, life changes, and coaching sessions.
A Christian Perspective
The Bible teaches that genuine joy is rooted in our relationship with God rather than our circumstances. While this assessment measures psychological well-being, it is not intended to replace biblical truth or spiritual disciplines. Instead, it complements Christian coaching by encouraging thoughtful self-reflection and helping identify areas where emotional, relational, and spiritual growth may be beneficial.
As Scripture reminds us:
“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 (NASB95)
